A London Poem

english teaching jobs in london
french teaching jobs in paris
I’ve done them all, or so I think

Never taught Botswanese in Botswana
Peruvian in Peru
I’ve never been the thing I wanted

And on my travels far and wide
locking my disappearences in side
have you known yourself to be
the thing you hoped and prayed that you’d become

lock it up away inside
strike the fear from your eyes
and become yourself
a new beginning
speaking languages unknown across the world
colours unseen
sensations unfelt and untouched.

because as we move from place to place
we become a whole new arena of possibilities
the geography of our minds
far outdistancing the geography of our world
and we love the world
english teaching jobs in london

as if the londoners don’t speak their own language
but the world comes to the city
and, just like that, the city comes back to the world
feeling itself a new horizon
beyond the concrete
and the impossibility of it all
the hordes and crowds
of tourists and terrorists
spies and informers
activists and cops
monuments monumentally built
surrounded by the constant traffic
and the crowds beneath the Waterloo sunset

home to millions
many of whom say home is somewhere else
but then after forty years or so
it becomes their own place, their own impossible place
how did we ever become this?
like beavers with the most massive dam you’ve ever seen
it’s always the sheer outrageousness of it all
that appeals
that pulls like smoke
as we try to find a way
for the city to become more human
while what we mean is, all this humanity oppresses us
maybe it does
maybe it frightens some
but the possibility of the impossible city
heartens me
more than it’s possible for me to say.
