a tube ride

Virginia Woolfe and Caroline Shotton are riding the tube

the circle line I think and they are talking about waxing their legs

I am listening in on their conversation

Virginia thinks its too painful, Car thinks its a necessary evil

she used to talk about poetry and art used to talk of politics and change used to talk of home and happiness used to talk about books and magazines and on tuesdays discussed Karl Marx

she used to talk about a room where you could shut the door and dream and write and think and have the absolute right to lock or unlock at will and discretion

she used to talk about lesser blue and indigo and crimean red and think about the names on the tubes in the store and weave that into the poetry of light that danced across the canvas

she used to talk about fairness and justice and hope and mapping a world where the centre of a web of meaning was the written word and then the lines spun out in all directions crossing weaving and there was a pig and a spider and a road that wasn’t taken and to everybody according to their needs and from everybody according to their ability and nobody was greedy in her map of the world and they all looked towards the middle where there was a door that a woman would close

she used to dream of beaches where there was white sand and a blue sea and men and women sat under umbrellas who sometimes talked about liberation in the jungle and sometimes talked about the end of empire and sometimes drank cold drinks and sometimes drank hot drinks mint tea to be specific

she dreams of the roar of the tube in the tunnel and imagines that it is the sea, but really knows that it is her crying out and she prays that nobody hears.
