Monday
I see you dressed in Casual Fabrics
Hoping for the first of spring
The moon
The dusk
Envelops you like a cloak of midnight.
As you fall into unknown pressures
Reminding yourself of who and what you were
You never wanted any of this emptiness
But you found
All the same
and as if by coincidence
Your own enveloping shame.
Tuesday
She appears in a ball of light
So easy it seems, so easy and so graceful
Her smile playing just at the very corners of her lips
She takes a step towards him, and his heart changes gear
In the morning they go walking by a lake
the sun is high, more optimistic than their hearts
she is wearing Dance Fabrics. It eases her heart
somehow to feel that she can move
leap out, express the world in song
Wednesday
The third day brought an empty sky
Nothing but grey enveloping the city.
He looks for her in bars and in the faces of other women
At night, he finds her in someone else’s kiss.
Thursday
He wakes up with a head that’s made of regret.
Stumbles into bathroom, looking for a toothbrush.
But it’s her face that he sees in the mirror, not his own.
He begins almost to wonder which in fact is which.
He goes into work. Every face on the metro reminds
him of hers, some tiny detail or passing characteristic
the line of the jaw, the turn of the head, the eyes
all so familiar now, all almost becoming boring
to him in their endless repetitions.
At the office a secretary walks towards him
And for a moment he’s convinced it’s her
The feeling passes, leaving only
a generalised sense of embarrassment.
Friday
And this was when, and how, and where, it all turned
Meeting for coffee in a crowded place
he begins to speak his mind
How things have changed in such a short space and time.
She smiles at him. All’s forgiven. Forgotten?
Two coffee cups are left to tell us all the tale.
