Sutra

The term ’Sutra'refers to the scriptures and oral teachings of Buddha in his quest to enlighten students. The following song lyrics therefore have a strong philisphoical meaning.

In sanskrit, Sutra literally means a thread that holds things together, or more metaphorically a collection of teachings that form a manual.

It was with this in mind and having read a number of books on Buddhism and Hinduism when I was still invovled in those jobs in secondary education, I wrote Sutra which in essence is about opening your mind to accept your weaknesses, identifying your strenghts and working towards becoming a better person in adulthood than the suppressed teachings we are generally subjected to in western religions and schools.

I believe everybody needs something to believe in whether it is a God, a spiritual omnipresence or just the energy around us, but in order to get on in life it is most important that a person understands themself.

Sutra

Once I knew my mind I knew I could be kind

It was never right to walk into a fight

Found a state of mind I thought I’d left behind

Experience remains the burden of my shame.

Chorus

There was a time when I set the mould

There was a time when days just seemed to unfold

I lose myself to set me free

Feel my breath roll like the waves of the sea.

Set me free

Let me be

Blind man see

The heart that took my hand led me through the land

To cultivate a path before my time is past

The healing of my wounds couldn’t come too soon

Embrace what I adhere, abandon all my fears.

[chorus]

The realms of make-belief were masters of my grief

The hungry ghost that roams like a dog without a bone

The ink tip of my pen writes the words of Zen

What is weak is strong, I sense that I belong.
